The Heart and Heritage of the Queen Liliʻuokalani Canoe Race
A Labor Day tradition since 1972, the race was originally organized by the Kai ʻOpua Canoe Club and honors the titular Queen Liliʻuokalani, Hawaii’s last reigning monarch. Today it welcomes over 2,500 paddlers from around the world, including many from Australia, Japan, and New Zealand.
- Originally started as a simple training exercise, over the decades the race drew more attention and grew into an international phenomenon.

Inside the Thrilling Race Weekend
- Thursday: Casual, action-packed 8-person relay sprint races at Kailua Pier.
- Saturday: The grueling, signature 18-mile single-hull long-distance “Iron” races.
- Saturday Night: The traditional, vibrant Torch Light Parade through Historic Kailua Village.
- Sunday & Monday: Thrilling double-hull showdowns, small boat competitions, and the Kupuna Classic.
For in-person event viewing we highly recommend finding a spot along Aliʻi Drive if you are looking to catch the action. All specific start times for individual races and events can be found on the official website so you can plan your schedule accordingly. There will be a food booth open Friday through Sunday with delicious local offerings as well as arts and crafts vendors on Saturday and Sunday.
